Psychotherapy is an interpersonal, relational intervention used by trained psychotherapists to aid clients in improving their mental health. This usually includes increasing individual sense of well-being and reducing subjective discomforting experience. Psychotherapists employ a range of techniques based on experiential relationship building, dialogue, communication and behavior change that are designed to improve the mental health of a client or patient, or to improve group relationships (such as in a family).
Dave's areas of expertise include:
*Anxiety Disorders
*Post Traumatic Stress Disorder
*Panic Disorder
*Depression
*Chronic Pain
*Relational/Marital Therapy
*Life Transitions
Growing scientific evidence indicates that
the dynamics of traumatic stress and its
symptoms have significant biological
components. Developed by Dr. Peter Levine,
author of Waking the Tiger: Healing Trauma,
Somatic Experiencing® (SE) is a powerful
method for addressing the psychobiology
of stress and trauma. Dr. Levine has studied
and observed traumatic stress in humans and
animals for over thirty years and has developed
a deep understanding of human survival
energy’s function.
This body-focused approach understands
that traumatic stress symptoms are often
expressions of incomplete or fixated lower
brain functions of fight, flight, and freeze.
SE helps people complete these responses
and restore their inherent self-correcting, self-regulating echanisms. Integrating lower
psychomotor processes with higher brain
processes of cognition and feeling creates
a more flexible neurological system, and
enhances a person's capacity to enjoy a wide spectrum of human experience.
Somatic Experiencing is appropriate for
anyone working in the field of trauma: physical
therapists, psychotherapists, physicians, psychologists, nurses, bodyworkers, psychiatrists,
educators, occupational therapists, speech
pathologists, social workers, martial artists,
vocational counselors, and others.

Rosen Method bodywork is a powerful intervention for stress reduction and reaching the mind/body connection. Developed by Marion Rosen, PT, it is distinguished by the gentle, direct, non-manipulative touch used to facilitate deep relaxation allowing the person inside to come forth.
As a client relaxes emotions held by the body may emerge and allow a deeper understanding of self, behavioral and relationship patterns and one's place in the world. Rosen Method is a wonderful adjunct to psychotherapy, for chronic pain and headaches, stress related problems and healing from some trauma related experiences.
"When I work with clients or patients I consider their life circumstances, and this can include the physical condition, stressors, and social and family dynamics. All of these enter into a person's level of wellness and where they want o go in life."

Reflections
I have worked in the healing arts profession as a manual physical therapist for the past (gulp!!:) 36 years and I find the SE work some of the most valuable that I have experienced. The precise, focused and gentle way of cellulary accessing tissue intelligence is a beautiful dance of listening deeply, observing intently and facilitating exquisitely. My daughter, 22 at the time, had a session with Dave and she had been hit by a car when she was 16. She had much body work by the best of the best and still there was something locked deeply in the cells that was creating pain, heaviness in the chest, anxiety and depression. After a one hour session, I heard her laugh--you know that deep, gut authentic laugh, that I hadn't heard in years. She clearly was accessing a part of self that had been buried and cut off for some time. I am grateful for the lasting effects of this work and the artistic dance with the cells. Thank you so much for the availability of this work.
Kind Regards, Dee Ahern, RPT

Physical, psychological and spiritual pain and anxiety have been woven and entwined into the fabric of my life. They colored my very existence because I have lived with physical disabilities and pain all my life.
My amazing recovery journey is a testimony to Dave Berger’s knowledge, skill, and compassionate demeanor; both as a physical therapist and psychotherapist. He is a healer who really knows the body/mind connection. I have a neurological condition—cerebral palsey. I have dealt with PTSD, crippling pain from back and neck disc issues, and excruciating nerve pain and spasms on a daily basis as a child and adult.
Presently, I am happy to be relatively stable and pain management is under control. I can now participate in activities of daily living with greater ease and independence; I interact socially with more confidence. I truly know my body, mind, and soul. I credit Dave Berger’s knowledge and expertise; my family and friends have strongly acknowledged this as well. I highly recommend Dave Berger as a physical therapist and psychotherapist.
